What is
SAFe?
The acronym SAFe stands for the Scaled Agile Framework®. It’s a scaling method for agility, which was developed by Scaled Agile Inc. (SAI) in Boulder, USA. SAFe is particularly effective in medium-sized companies and corporations. The framework offers coherent answers to questions of scaling and combines all elements from team to portfolio level.

FOR SUCCESS
The SAFe implementation can be approached in different ways. We would like to share a few of our success factors with you. You can read our hand-writing from these.
A strong goal
At the beginning, you need a clear goal and a clear “why?”. What should be achieved with the implementation of SAFe? An end in itself is not enough. Along the way, it will get difficult and doubts about the implementation will arise. If the goal is missing, everything quickly flies off the rails.
A strong team
We help with the early formation of a strong transformation team (LACE). This team must find itself, organize itself and be empowered by the management. Without the transformation team, there will be a diffusion of responsibility. We also empower the organization to transform through the team – after all, it is your organization and not ours.
Strong communication
We rely on early and strong communication models. A SAFe implementation is a transformation. Many areas of change cannot be planned and require trial and error and courageous experimentation. This process is accompanied by uncertainties and possible fears on the part of those involved. Open and early communication about the goals and the change steps are essential in order to create a “joint” transformation.
Living agility
We focus on “agile moments”. Too often, the focus is on the mechanical implementation of framework principles. In our experience, SAFe and agility are successful when they are based on attitude rather than rules. This requires constant experiences and epiphanies, coupled with joint reflection.
External remains external
We praise sports science with the concept of the inner and outer control loop. Roger Federer didn’t need a coach for years to show him how to play tennis. We see our strength in operating the outer control loop. Transformations should not be based on external people alone. Of course, we take on roles at short notice and thus get a push into the organization. In that case, however, we are happy to work with an internal pairing.
Everything just for a certification?
Certification is the start of a journey, not the end. It’s similar to a driver’s license. We believe that certification training is an important element in establishing a common language and a common mindset. Ultimately, however, all that is needed is the “tipping point”. This contributes to a learning organization and can be made significantly more needs-based. One SAFe course after another will not be enough to make a transformation successful.
Metrics and empiricism
Empirical systems, which are used in agility, allow us to take measurements and make statements. We try to work with metrics at different levels early on and give the transformation the necessary depth. At some point, someone somewhere will (rightfully) ask: “What has all this achieved?”. So let’s not try to tweak the Formula 1 car without asking ourselves whether the lap time has also improved.
